São Pedro de Rubiães is one of the classic stage endings on the Caminho Português between Ponte de Lima and Valença. It is also where many walkers, after a long day, look for something other than a bunk in a dormitory: a real bed, a hot shower and some quiet. Here is the route, what you need to know, and why a short 9-kilometre detour changes a night on the Way.
On the central route (Caminho Central), the stage usually starts from Ponte de Lima and covers roughly 18 kilometres to Rubiães. The beginning is gentle, following the river and passing through small hamlets, but the middle of the stage holds the day's only real challenge: the climb up the Labruja, to the Alto da Portela Grande. The slope is short but steep; you take it slowly, and the view from the top soon makes you forget it.
The descent then leads through woodland to the church of São Pedro de Rubiães, a small Romanesque building set right beside the path. Just next to it, an old marco miliário (Roman milestone) is a reminder that this route follows a road far older than the shells painted on the walls.
Rubiães has a pilgrim hostel, handy and right on the route. But after a stage with real climbing, most walkers mainly want to recover: to sleep alone, hang out their washing, rest their legs without sharing a ten-bed room. That is exactly where Paredes de Coura, about ten kilometres away, comes into its own.
The town is quiet, tucked into a green valley, away from the bustle. You find genuine calm here, the river beaches of the rio Coura to soothe your feet in summer, and good places to eat. The next day, a short transfer brings you back to the Way, rested, ready to head on towards Valença and Spain.
Casa Outeiro 99 is a traditional Minho farmhouse, built in stone with a tiled roof, with two self-contained units and a terrace looking out over the valley — the perfect spot for a sunset and a glass of something after the walk. What matters to a pilgrim:
From Rubiães, the Way continues towards Valença and its fortress, then crosses the Minho into Tui, in Spain — about 19 km. From there, a little over 100 km remain to Santiago de Compostela: enough to earn the Compostela.
The region is crossed by the central route, but the Senda Litoral / Caminho da Costa also runs through northern Portugal. If you are undecided, the central route is the busier and the better waymarked on this section.
Remember to have your credencial (pilgrim passport) stamped each day. Accommodations, cafés and churches along the way usually have a stamp on hand.
