Paredes de Coura is really at its best from late spring through autumn: that's when the valley comes alive — swimming in the river, village fêtes, and one of the finest festivals in Portugal. Here's when to come, depending on what you're after.
The countryside is at its greenest, the trails are perfect for walking, and the first swims in the rio Coura begin as the water warms up. It's also the start of the romarias, around mid-June. A quiet, gentle season, ideal for pilgrims on the Caminho Português.
This is high season. The river beaches of the rio Coura are in full swing, the fêtes and romarias come one after another, and above all: in August, the town hosts the Vodafone Paredes de Coura — the 2026 edition runs from 12 to 15 August, at Praia do Taboão. Accommodation goes very fast: book early.
The crowds head home, the light turns golden, and a few last romarias round off the season (through early October). The river stays swimmable into the first weeks in a good year. A perfect time for a peaceful stay, between nature and the food of the Minho.
Vinho Verde, trout, sarrabulho, smoked charcuterie, and the Sabores do Rio festival that celebrates local produce. Whatever time of year you come, the table of the Minho is worth the trip.
