Paredes de Coura sits at the heart of the Minho, a short distance from the Spanish border. That is what makes it a perfect base. A short distance away, Ponte de Lima is considered one of the oldest settlements in the country. Its medieval bridge spans the river Lima, lined with trees and granite houses. On market days, the lanes along the riverbank come alive with producers and craftspeople. You stroll, lunch by the water, then take to the road again to find the calm of the valley at the end of the day.
Valença do Minho watches over the river, right opposite the Spanish town of Tui. Its fortified stronghold, with star-shaped ramparts, is explored on foot from lane to lane. People also come for Portuguese linen: tablecloths, napkins and embroidery fill the shops within the walls. Easily reached by car, it is a half-day getaway that you can extend, or not, with a hop across the border.
Head to the ocean with Viana do Castelo, one of the finest towns on the Minho coast. From the heights, the Santuário de Santa Luzia overlooks the estuary and offers a panorama that reaches all the way to the sea. Below, the historic centre blends old façades and a riverfront, and the beaches are never far. A fine day of sea air and heritage, before returning to the cool of the hills.
Braga, one of the oldest and most history-rich cities in Portugal, is well worth the trip. You can admire its churches, its squares and its lively atmosphere. On its doorstep, the Bom Jesus do Monte unfolds its baroque sanctuary and monumental staircase, to climb or reach another way. The city is a little farther off, but still within a day's range, with the pleasure of returning afterwards to the green.
The border is only a step away, and the motorway makes Vigo easy to reach. This large Galician city offers an entirely different face: a lively port, tapas, a Spanish atmosphere. From there, boats set off for the Cíes islands, a nature reserve with renowned beaches. A complete change of scene for a day, without changing accommodation for the night.
For nature lovers, the Peneda-Gerês National Park is within reach. Mountains, forests, waterfalls and granite villages make up Portugal's only national park. You hike, you swim, you observe protected wildlife. A full day in the open air, and the return to Paredes de Coura feels all the sweeter for it.
